Frequently asked questions
What if there's a waiting list?
Some sections are very popular and may have a waiting list. The earlier you register your interest, the shorter the wait. In the meantime, there may be spaces at other groups in the Croydon District.
Can my child try a session before committing?
Absolutely. We want young people to feel happy and confident before they join. We’ll usually arrange a visit to one of our regular meetings so your child can see what Scouts is like.
Can parents get involved?
Yes. Parent volunteers make a huge difference, whether as section assistants, occasional helpers, committee members, or by helping at events and camps. You don’t need previous experience; training and DBS checks are provided.
Is my child covered by insurance?
Yes. All registered members of The Scout Association are covered by comprehensive insurance while taking part in approved Scout activities.
How much does it cost?
Members pay a termly subscription to help cover activities, badges, insurance, and running costs. The exact amount can vary, and if cost is a concern please speak to us because support may be available.
What uniform does my child need?
Each section has its own uniform colour and badges. Uniform can be bought from the Scout Store, and we’ll give you full details when your child joins.
What activities do they do?
Our programme is varied and age-appropriate. Young people take part in games, crafts, outdoor adventures, badge work, camps, community projects, and aviation-themed activities. Visit the individual section pages to see what each age group does.
What if we move to a different area?
Scouting is nationwide. If you move, we can help you transfer to another Scout Group so membership, badges, and progress can carry on.
How do I raise a concern or complaint?
Please speak to your child’s Section Leader first. If the matter needs formal handling, you can contact the Group Scout Leader or District Commissioner. The safety and wellbeing of young people is always our top priority.
